For our first review, we decided to review a cocktail that most people are probably already familiar with, the White Russian. The recipe that we used was 1 oz. of Kahlua Coffee Liqueur, 1 oz. of Skyy Vodka, and 1 oz. of 1% Milk. It was built over ice in a low-ball glass. Remember, for the White Russian, you can use any of your favourite vodkas and coffee liqueurs.
The White Russian has a nice, dark caramel colour. The smell was dominantly of Kahlua, with its distinct coffee overtones. The initial taste that we experienced was a chocolaty-coffee blend. There was definitely an alcohol burn present from the vodka, especially on the back end. However, the aftertaste brought back the initial chocolate and coffee flavour. The longer the cocktail sat, the more the alcohol burn disappeared, probably due to the dilution from the ice.
Overall, the White Russian is on the sweeter end of the cocktail spectrum. We found that it went down easy and light. If you were to use a thicker cream instead of 1% milk, I would imagine that it would be thicker and probably even sweeter. There are different recipes online for this cocktail with varying portions of ingredients, so don’t hesitate to experiment to find your favourite blend. If you’re a fan of vodka or coffee liqueur, this is a must-try cocktail.
